Towing - Distances
Important information relating to towing another vehicle.
Mark Ropes if Distance is More than 1.8m

If the distance between two vehicles is more than 1.8m, the tow-rope must be clearly visible and marked with a red flag tied to it.

Towing Distance May Not Exceed 3.5m

The distance between the two vehicles may never exceed 3.5m.

Speed Limit When Towing

You may not drive faster than 30km/h when towing another, unless you are using a solid bar.

Towed Vehicles with Passengers

You may not drive faster than 30km/h when towing a vehicle carrying passengers, unless the towed vehicle is a semi-trailer.

Towing on Freeways

Towing on any freeway with a minimum speed sign of more than 30km/h is illegal, unless the vehicle is towed with a solid bar.

Attaching the Tow-Rope

The tow-rope must be securely attached to both vehicles.

Licensed Driver in Towed Vehicle

The towed vehicle must be controlled by a licensed driver of the same class of vehicle, unless the steerable wheels are off the ground or are controlled by a towing device.

Brakes on Towed Vehicle

The towed vehicle must be equipped with efficient brakes, unless it is towed with a drawbar or tow-bar.
