Additional Rules for Motorcycles
Quad-Bikes & Unlicensed Off-Road Motorcycles
Quad-bikes and off-road (unlicenced) motorcycles are not allowed on a public road.
Safety Helmets
A safety helmet must always be worn by the driver and any passenger.
Headlights Always On
Motorcycles must have their headlights on at all times, day or night, when being driven on a public road.
Keep Feet on Footrest
You must keep both feet on the footrests of a motorcycle and sit astride the saddle.
Carrying Passengers
You are not allowed to carry any passenger if the engine capacity is 50cc or less.
Passengers must sit astride the saddle with both feet on the footrests, or must be seated in a side-car.
Not more than two people may travel on a motorcycle and not more than two adults may ride in a sidecar.
Driving on Freeways
You may not drive a motorcycle with an engine capacity of 50cc or less on freeways.
Riding in Groups
Motorcycles must ride in single-file on the road.
Only one motorcycle at a time may overtake another vehicle travelling in the same lane.
Hands on Steering Wheel
Always keep at least one hand on the handlebars at all times.
All Wheels on the Surface!
Ensure that all the wheels always stay in contact with the road surface.
Numberplates
A motorcycle must have one number plate secured on the rear of the vehicle.
Towing
A motorcycle may not tow any kind of vehicle.
Carrying Loads
Projection Limits
Not more than 600mm to the front of the front axle.
Not more than 900mm to the rear of the back axle.
Not more than 450mm to the side of the motorcycle wheels.
Not more than 300mm to the side of the sidecar wheel.
Carrying In Front of the Driver
No person, animal or article may be carried in front of the driver on the seat, fuel tank or handlebars.
